Agriculture in Vaishali along the Gandak River
Farming between the banks of rivers is a rare sight, especially along large rivers like the Gandak. Despite the challenges posed by annual floods and silt deposits, farmers in Hajipur cultivate crops like cucumber, pumpkin, watermelon, and muskmelon on hundreds of acres between the banks of the Gandak river. The fertile soil due to silt deposits leads to bumper crop production after the floods recede.
Unique Farming Practices
Umesh Sahni, a farmer in Hajipur, shared that the cultivation of crops like cucumber, pumpkin, watermelon, and muskmelon begins after Kartik Purnima and continues until July between the banks of the Gandak river. This six-month-long farming activity is the primary source of income for many farmers in the region, supporting their households throughout the year.
Challenges and Rewards
While the unique farming practices along the Gandak river yield good profits for the farmers, they also face challenges such as the high cost of farming between the riverbanks and the risk of water inundation causing losses. Despite these obstacles, the tradition of farming between the banks of the Gandak river in Hajipur continues to thrive, providing a sustainable source of income for the local farmers.
