Large Scale Wheat Cultivation in West Champaran District

Wheat cultivation is done on a large scale in the West Champaran district of Bihar. Most of the farmers in 18 out of the total blocks cultivate wheat extensively. However, there is a delay in sowing wheat after the late harvesting of rice, leading to a delay in land preparation and ultimately affecting the quality of production and yield despite high costs. In order to address this issue, a new method of land preparation and sowing is being introduced which not only saves 15-20 days during sowing but also improves productivity while reducing costs.

Zero Tillage Technique for Wheat Cultivation

Experts at the Agriculture Science Center in Majhaulia Prakhand, Dr. Dheeru Kumar Tiwari, suggest adopting the Zero Tillage technique for wheat cultivation. Traditionally, after rice harvesting, the land needs to be prepared 6-7 times for wheat sowing, incurring costs of around 2500-3000 rupees per hectare. By using the Zero Tillage technique, farmers can save on these costs and also gain an additional 20-25 days for wheat sowing after rice harvesting, leading to increased wheat production.

Benefits of Zero Tillage Technique

With the Zero Tillage technique, the depth of wheat seed sowing is 3-5 cm and a layer of light soil covers the seeds, leading to better germination. This technique also helps in improving the carbon content and essential nutrients for plants through crop residue contribution in the soil. Additionally, using the Zero Tillage machine for wheat sowing can reduce seed consumption to 35-40 kg per acre, saving both time and money for farmers compared to traditional methods.
