Gold Carat Purity and BIS Guidelines

Investors and women have a special affinity towards gold, which holds a significant place in India’s culture. From gold jewelry to gold coins, biscuits, and bars, we often make purchases related to gold. With festivals like Akshaya Tritiya approaching, there is a high demand for buying gold. It is essential to know the quality of the gold you are purchasing, whether it meets the specified carat purity or not.

Understanding Carat Calculation

The purity of gold is measured in carats, denoted by “kt” or “k.” 24 carat gold is the purest form with 99.9% gold content. However, to make jewelry, other metals are mixed with gold, such as in 18k gold where 75% is pure gold. The higher the carat value, the purer the gold in items like bars, biscuits, and jewelry.

Magnet and Acid Test for Gold

Two common tests to check the purity of gold are the magnet test and the acid test. In the magnet test, real gold will not react to the magnet as it is non-reactive, while other metals will. The acid test involves using hydrochloric acid and nitric acid on a stone with gold; if it changes color, the gold is impure. These tests are essential to ensure the authenticity of the gold you are purchasing.
