Discussion on Caste Census in 2024 Lok Sabha Elections
The issue of caste census has become a topic of discussion in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Both the NDA and Mahagathbandhan in Jharkhand are vying for OBC votes as the OBC population in the state is around 55%. During the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of caste census. In response to the Mahagathbandhan’s claim to conduct caste census, the NDA has put forth a big challenge.
OBC Reservation Bill Repealed
The Hemant Soren government in Jharkhand has repealed the OBC reservation bill passed by the Vidhan Sabha. The Governor returned the Jharkhand Reservation (Amendment) Act-2022 for review by the government. Under this bill, OBC reservation in Jharkhand was increased from 14% to 27%, ST reservation from 26% to 28%, SC reservation from 10% to 12%, and EWS category reservation was also introduced.
OBC Population and Representation in Lok Sabha
Out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Jharkhand, NDA has fielded OBC candidates on six seats. Four of these candidates are from BJP, one from AJSU, and one from Congress. Among the unreserved seats, Jamshedpur has the lowest OBC voter population. Parties are fielding OBC candidates in these seats to secure victory.
Current OBC MPs in Jharkhand
Currently, there are four OBC MPs from unreserved seats in Jharkhand. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, MPs from Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Koderma, and Giridih were from the OBC category. As per electoral calculations, the number of OBC MPs could increase in the upcoming elections.
जाति गणना के मुद्दे पर लोकसभा चुनाव 2024 में चर्चा जारी है। झारखंड में एनडीए और महागठबंधन, दोनों ओबीसी वोटरों पर दांव लगा रहे हैं। राज्य में ओबीसी की आबादी तकरीबन 55 फीसदी है और इसके चलते यह मुद्दा महत्वपूर्ण है। राहुल गांधी और महागठबंधन ने जाति गणना का मुद्दा उठाया है, जबकि एनडीए ने ओबीसी उम्मीदवारों को बड़ी संख्या में उतारा है। झारखंड में 14 लोकसभा सीटों में से आठ सीटें ओबीसी के उम्मीदवारों के लिए हैं। इसके साथ ही, ओबीसी आरक्षण विधेयक को भी वापस लौटाया गया है। झारखंड में ओबीसी की आबादी 55 फीसदी के बीच है और राष्ट्रीय ओबीसी मोर्चा आरक्षण को 27 फीसदी तक बढ़ाने की मांग कर रही है। इसके साथ ही, ओबीसी समुदाय के लोगों को उनके हिसाब से आरक्षण अभी तक नहीं मिल पाया है।
