Hemant Soren denied interim bail in land scam case
Jharkhand’s former Chief Minister Hemant Soren faced a setback on Saturday when the special PMLA court in Ranchi refused to grant him interim bail in a land scam case. He had sought interim bail for 13 days to attend his uncle’s last rites. However, the court rejected his plea citing opposition from the Enforcement Directorate.
Demise of Hemant Soren’s uncle
Prior to this development, Hemant Soren’s father and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shibu Soren’s elder brother Ram Soren passed away on Saturday morning. He had been unwell for a long time and was residing in Ranchi.
ED arrest and previous bail plea by Soren
Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 in connection with a money laundering case related to a land scam in Jharkhand. He has been in judicial custody for nearly three months. Soren had previously filed a bail plea on April 16, alleging that his arrest was politically motivated and part of a conspiracy to force him to join the BJP. However, the court granted the ED an extension to respond to his plea.
Supreme Court approached over non-hearing of plea
On April 24, Hemant Soren knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court, stating that his plea challenging the ED’s arrest in the money laundering case was not being heard. His senior advocate Kapil Sibal informed the bench that the High Court had reserved its decision on his plea on February 28 but had not pronounced any judgment yet. The court then directed the registry to list the plea for hearing on a specific date.
