Prohibition Movement in Bihar
Since April 1, 2016, Bihar has been under a liquor ban, benefiting women and children the most. The largest opposition to the liquor ban in Bihar started from the land of Jayaprakash Narayan. Social worker and environmentalist Manohar Manav led the movement against alcohol in Diara, creating awareness among women, youth, and the elderly in all districts of Bihar.
Women Leading the Charge
In Chhapra, women took a stand against liquor mafia by attacking their distilleries without any police or administrative support. The courage of these women inspired others to join the prohibition movement. Started in Sitabdira in 2009, the movement gained momentum and ultimately led to the implementation of a liquor ban in Bihar by the Nitish government on April 1, 2016.
Impact on Society
Manohar Manav highlighted the harmful effects of alcohol on families during interviews, mentioning how children in households where liquor was made couldn’t focus on education. The health of those consuming alcohol deteriorated, leading to financial strain on families for medical treatment. Women were even losing their lives due to alcohol abuse, prompting the community to stand united against the liquor menace.
