Low Voter Turnout in Bihar
In the world’s largest democracy, Bihar has seen lower voter turnout compared to other states in the country. Except for Jammu and Kashmir, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, voters from all states participated more in Bihar than their own states. Only voters from the Katihar Lok Sabha constituency participated in voting at the national average level.
Voting Statistics in 2019 Lok Sabha Elections
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, only 57.33 percent of voters in Bihar participated in voting, which is lower than the national average of 67.4 percent. Concerned about this situation, the Election Commission of India has started a baseline survey from July 8 to increase voter participation, which will run until July 25.
Voter Turnout Comparison with Other States
According to Election Commission data, Lakshadweep saw the highest voter turnout at 85.21 percent, while Bihar had the lowest voter participation at 57.33 percent. Western Bengal had 81.76 percent voter turnout, Jharkhand had 66.8 percent, and Uttar Pradesh had 59.21 percent voter turnout, all higher than Bihar.
Voter Turnout in Various Bihar Constituencies
In different Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar, the voter turnout varied. Some constituencies like Katihar had a higher turnout at 67.64 percent, while others like Nalanda had a lower turnout at 48.79 percent. Overall, Bihar’s voting turnout was lower than the national average, prompting efforts to increase voter participation in the state.
