NHRC Sends Notice to Bihar Government

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to the Nitish Kumar government and the Bihar DGP regarding a case of sexual assault on a minor. The case involves the death of a 13-year-old victim in Darbhanga, where the Gram Panchayat attempted to manage the case by offering a sum of 1.25 lakh rupees. The police have not taken any action on the matter yet, and no investigation has been conducted.

Delay in Police Action

NHRC has taken cognizance of the media reports and issued notices to the Bihar government and the police chief for the alleged delay in police action in the case of sexual assault on a minor girl. The authorities have been given a deadline of 6 weeks to provide a detailed report on the matter. The victim’s family had reportedly sent her to the accused’s house after receiving the money from the Gram Panchayat, stating that no one would marry her.

Tragic Circumstances

After being evicted from her home, the victim was forced to stay at the accused’s house for 5 days before being sent to her elder sister’s place by her grandparents. Tragically, the victim passed away on March 1st, 16 days after the sexual assault. NHRC has expressed concern over the violation of the victim’s human rights and has demanded a report from the Bihar government, seeking accountability for the delayed action in the case.
