Neatish Kumar, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, has once again made a political twist in the state. On Sunday morning, he submitted his resignation to the Governor, Rajendra Arlekar, informing him of his decision to separate from the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) coalition. It is now expected that the Janata Dal United (JDU) will form an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Neatish Kumar will take oath as the Chief Minister once again.
With the JDU-BJP alliance confirmed, it is expected that the support letters of the MLAs will be submitted to the Governor on Sunday evening, and Neatish Kumar will take oath as the Chief Minister. The alliance will have a total of 127 MLAs in the 243-member Legislative Assembly, which is five more than the majority mark of 122.
Meanwhile, the focus will be on the statements of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and its leaders, especially Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav. In the past, when Neatish Kumar broke ties with the RJD, there was a bitter exchange of words between the two parties.
Neatish Kumar has had a complex history with the Chief Minister’s position. He first became the Chief Minister on March 3, 2000, but had to resign on March 10, 2000, due to lack of majority. He became the Chief Minister again in 2005 with the support of the BJP, and then in 2010 after the Assembly elections. He resigned from the Chief Minister’s post during the Lok Sabha elections due to poor performance of his party, and later took oath again in 2015 after removing Jitan Ram Manjhi. In 2020, he took oath as the Chief Minister again after the NDA alliance won the Assembly elections. He resigned from the post in 2022 and announced his alliance with the Mahagathbandhan, only to resign again in 2024.
