High Prevalence of Diabetes and Hypertension in India

Approximately 10 crore people in India suffer from diabetes, while 18.83 crore Indians have high blood pressure according to WHO. This indicates a rising trend of hypertension and diabetes in the country. Unfortunately, there is no complete cure for these diseases, and those in advanced stages often require daily medication. Surprisingly, despite the high prevalence of these conditions, many people do not take medication due to high costs.

NPPA Reduces Prices of 69 Drugs for Diabetes and Hypertension

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has reduced the prices of around 69 drugs used for diabetes and hypertension in India. NPPA has set the retail prices of formulations for these diseases, with a cap on the prices of 31 formulations. This move aims to make essential medications more affordable and accessible to the masses, ensuring that these drugs are not sold above the specified prices.

Focus on Formulations and Price Reduction

The formulation of a drug refers to the composition used in its production. For example, a diabetes medication may contain dapagliflozin, metformin hydrochloride, and glimepiride, forming a unique formulation. The prices of 39 formulations have been determined by NPPA, with a cap on 31 compositions. Over the years, NPPA has played a vital role in reducing the prices of essential medications, making them more affordable for the general public. This recent decision to lower the prices of diabetes and hypertension drugs will benefit millions of individuals in need of these medications.
