Sushil Kumar Modi, former Deputy Chief Minister and senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, has announced his retirement from politics amidst the Lok Sabha elections. He stated on social media that he has been battling cancer for the past six months and now feels it is time to inform the people. He expressed his gratitude and dedication to the country, Bihar, and the party. Following this announcement, former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad wished him good health and predicted a significant void in the upcoming elections.
It is reported that former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi is suffering from throat cancer and is currently undergoing treatment at Delhi’s AIIMS. Sushil Modi, along with Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad, emerged after the JP Movement. These three leaders are considered the products of the JP Movement. Sushil Modi has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since the beginning. In 1971, Sushil Modi started his political career as a student leader and quickly gained recognition as a youth leader. In 1990, he contested the assembly elections and became a legislator, gradually rising in Bihar’s politics.
In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Sushil Modi won from Bhagalpur on a BJP ticket. In 2005, he resigned from his parliamentary membership and was elected to the Legislative Council, becoming the Deputy Chief Minister in the Bihar government. Sushil Modi served as the Finance Minister of Bihar from 2005 to 2013 and again from 2017 to 2020. In 2020, when the NDA government was formed again, CM Nitish Kumar wanted Sushil Modi to be the Deputy CM. However, the top leadership sent him to the Rajya Sabha. It is also said that Sushil Modi played a crucial role behind Nitish Kumar’s return to the NDA this time.
