Introduction

TN Seshan became the Chief Election Commissioner of India in 1990. Known for his clean image and tough stance on famous Seshan principles, he was willing to challenge even the Prime Minister if necessary. He made it clear that there would be no rigging under his watch during any election. In 1995, there were assembly elections in Bihar, a state notorious for booth capturing, ballot paper loot, and violence during elections.

Transparent Elections

Commanded to Bihar from Punjab, TN Seshan ensured transparent elections in Bihar in 1995. He deployed commandos to every polling booth in the state, especially those known for violence and booth capturing. Author Mrityunjay Sharma mentions these events in his book “Broken Promises: Caste, Crime and Politics in Bihar,” shedding light on the efforts made by Seshan to conduct fair elections in the state.

Election Violence

The 1995 Bihar assembly elections were not just a challenge for Lalu Yadav and the opposition but also for Naxals and Bahubalis. The state was rocked by multiple murders during the election period. Even after the election results were announced, violence continued. Prominent leaders like Ashok Singh were brutally murdered during this time, showcasing the intense political climate in Bihar during that period.
