UGC has issued an important notice regarding the validity of MPhil programs in Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work. According to the notice, the validity of MPhil in Clinical Psychology and MPhil in Psychiatric Social Work has been extended until the academic year 2025-2026. The UGC has relaxed the rules for these two programs, allowing students to be admitted for two more academic sessions. The MPhil program is a two-year program that familiarizes students with various research and analysis techniques.
In December 2023, UGC announced that the MPhil degree would no longer be recognized as a valid degree. Higher education institutions were instructed not to offer MPhil programs, as the UGC had previously announced that all universities would no longer offer advanced research courses. Universities were directed to stop admitting new students to MPhil programs for the academic year 2023-2024.
These rules are in line with the National Education Policy 2020, which recommends discontinuing MPhil programs in universities. NEP suggests a four-year undergraduate degree and a research-intensive master’s degree, eliminating the need for an MPhil to pursue a PhD.
According to NEP, “Higher education institutions will have the flexibility to offer different designs of master’s programs: (a) a two-year program that is entirely dedicated to research for those who have completed a two-year graduate/master’s program. To pursue a PhD, either a master’s degree or a four-year graduate degree with research will be required. The MPhil program will be discontinued.”
