Large Scale Watermelon Cultivation in Gaya, Bihar
In the Manpur block of Gaya district in Bihar, a large-scale cultivation of watermelon (known as Lalmi) is taking place. Farmers in the Nanouk village have been growing watermelon for the past 15 years, leading to good income generation. Initially, a farmer from the village brought watermelon seeds of the Jaunpuri variety from Jaunpur, which sparked the interest of other villagers as well. Today, more than 50 farmers in the village cultivate watermelon, including the Madhu Raja variety along with the Jaunpuri variety.
Watermelon Cultivation Process and Market Prices
From January to June, watermelon is grown in approximately 30 acres of land in the village, yielding around 5 quintals per acre. Initially, the market price for watermelon is good, with wholesale rates ranging from ₹40 per kilo. However, the prices tend to fluctuate, sometimes dropping to as low as ₹10 per kilo. Watermelon planting begins in January, and fruits start appearing from March onwards, with the harvest continuing until June.
Profitable Watermelon Farming in Gaya, Bihar
Despite the initial investment of up to ₹1 lakh per acre in watermelon cultivation, farmers can earn profits ranging from ₹3 to ₹4 lakhs per acre. The health benefits of consuming watermelon, which is rich in nutrients and has a sweet taste, include improved immune system, digestion, and skin health. Watermelon cultivation not only proves to be financially rewarding for the farmers in Gaya but also offers numerous health benefits to consumers.
