Deepak Kumar from Banka district in Bihar has chosen to pursue a career in agriculture instead of opting for a well-paying government job or a job in the corporate sector. After working in a multinational company in Delhi, Deepak decided to return to his village and start a goat farming business. He started with a few goats in 2018 and now has more than 45 goats of the Black Bengal breed. His success story has even been featured in a book called “Success Tales of Bihar Farmers”. Deepak is earning an annual income of over five lakh rupees from his goat farming venture.
Success comes when our dreams become bigger than ourselves, and this is exactly what happened with Deepak Kumar from Amarpur block in Banka district. Despite working hard day and night at a company like Amazon in Delhi, Deepak was not finding the success he desired. It was then that he came across the idea of goat farming through the internet. He returned to his village and started goat farming with one goat in 2018. Gradually, his herd grew to 40-45 goats. His story has been featured in the book “Success Tales of Bihar Farmers”. Deepak mentioned that he purchased his first Black Bengal goat from the Agriculture Science Center in Banka for Rs. 3500. He is also practicing integrated farming along with goat farming.
With the help of KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission), Deepak is successfully running his goat farming business. He mentioned that goat farming is a good source of income as he earns around Rs. 200 per day from goat manure and the fodder produced from leftover feed. He raises Black Bengal goats, which are native breeds suitable for the region. According to the livestock scientist at the Agricultural Science Center, the Black Bengal breed is ideal for this area and has several advantages. The most significant aspect is that these goats weigh around 25-30 kg in just 12 months, and they are easily sold in the market.
The Black Bengal or native breed goats are fed with normal fodder like rice, wheat, corn bran, green grass, and leaves. It costs around Rs. 3000-4000 to raise one goat. However, these goats can be easily sold for up to Rs. 20,000. With this income, Deepak is comfortably earning around five lakh rupees annually. Currently, he has 10 goats and four kids. He mentioned that there should be a minimum distance of 10 feet between each goat, and he is planning to build a larger shed to accommodate 400-500 goats.
